Overview Chin Augmentation

During this procedure, implants are used to improve the chin projection and overall shape.  The incision is generally placed in the mouth to avoid external scarring.  Some patients are better candidates for an external approach where the scar is hidden under the chin.  Although this procedure is usually performed alone, frequently it is combined with rhinoplasty.

Anesthesia type:  The majority of patients prefer to undergo the procedure using a general anesthetic.  On occasion patients will have the procedure performed with IV sedation and local anesthesia.

Length of surgery:  1-2 hours

Risks:  Infection, bleeding, loss of lip sensation, asymmetry, bone resorption, and implant malposition

Average recovery time:  Patients typically return to work in 7-10 days.  Moat patients start to resume normal activity in 2-3 weeks, and state that they are feeling back to normal in 4-6 weeks.

Duration of effect:  >10 years
